About these guidelines
These guidelines explain the submission, formatting, reviewing, and publication requirements for the 3rd Workshop on NLP for Languages Using Arabic Script (AbjadNLP 2027), held in conjunction with COLING 2027 in Macau.
Authors must follow the official AbjadNLP Call for Papers (CFP), the applicable COLING 2027 requirements, and the ACL/ARR policies adopted by the workshop.
Where requirements differ, binding host-conference and publisher rules take precedence. The final AbjadNLP CFP is authoritative for workshop-specific submission tracks, page limits, deadlines, and procedures.
1. Paper Types and Length
#AbjadNLP plans to accept the following regular research-paper categories:
| Paper type | Main content limit |
|---|---|
| Long paper | 8 pages |
| Short paper | 4 pages |
References are excluded from these limits.
Authors must include a dedicated Limitations section and follow the applicable instructions concerning ethical considerations, appendices, supplementary materials, and additional camera-ready pages.
ARR permits a Limitations section outside the main content limit when placed as instructed. The final AbjadNLP CFP will confirm the corresponding arrangements for direct workshop submissions.
Papers must present original, relevant, and scientifically substantiated research. Short papers should make a focused contribution rather than merely present an incomplete long paper.
2. Official Templates and Formatting
#Authors must use the official ACL paper templates, subject to any workshop-specific instructions issued by COLING 2027.
Official resources:
- ACL style files (LaTeX and templates): https://github.com/acl-org/acl-style-files
- ACL paper-formatting instructions: https://acl-org.github.io/ACLPUB/formatting.html
- ACL Author Guidelines: https://www.aclweb.org/adminwiki/index.php/ACL_Author_Guidelines
- ARR Call for Papers: https://aclrollingreview.org/cfp
The ACL style repository provides an Overleaf template and downloadable LaTeX files. Authors should use the current official versions and must not alter the style files to bypass formatting requirements.
Submitted manuscripts must be readable PDFs using the prescribed page size, margins, columns, fonts, and layout.
Arabic and Other Non-Latin Scripts
Authors must ensure that Arabic-script and other non-Latin text is displayed correctly, with appropriate font embedding, Unicode handling, diacritics, and right-to-left rendering.
The ACL formatting guidelines also require appropriate English translations and Latin-script transliterations of non-English examples. Authors should follow those instructions while preserving the original script accurately.
3. Submission Routes
#3.1 Direct Workshop Submission
Authors submitting directly to AbjadNLP must use the official workshop submission system announced in the CFP.
The Programme Chairs manage eligibility screening, reviewer assignment, scientific review, and acceptance decisions.
The submission portal and deadline will be published in the official CFP.
3.2 ACL Rolling Review (ARR) Commitment
AbjadNLP may offer an ARR commitment route, subject to confirmation of its participation and commitment arrangements.
If available, authors must:
- Have a paper that has completed the applicable ARR review process, including the required reviews and meta-review.
- Meet the eligibility requirements and review-cycle restrictions published by AbjadNLP.
- Submit the required commitment information through the designated process.
- Follow ARR rules on authorship, revisions, confidentiality, concurrent submissions, and commitment.
Authors submitting papers to ARR must also meet ARR's current OpenReview profile and reviewing-service requirements, where applicable.
Important: COLING 2027's main-conference ARR commitment route is separate from any AbjadNLP workshop commitment route. A commitment to COLING does not constitute a commitment to AbjadNLP.
ARR-reviewed papers are not automatically accepted by the workshop.
3.3 Shared-Task Submissions
Shared-task system-description papers are administered independently by their respective shared-task organising teams.
Authors must follow the submission instructions, eligibility requirements, review procedures, and deadlines published by the relevant shared task.
Each system-description paper must receive at least two independent, substantive reviews arranged by its shared-task organising team before an acceptance decision.
Shared-task overview papers submitted by task organisers undergo independent review managed by the AbjadNLP Programme Chairs.
Participation in a shared task does not automatically guarantee acceptance or archival publication of a system-description paper.
4. Anonymity and Originality
#Authors must comply with the anonymity requirements applicable to their submission route.
For ARR submissions, the manuscript and relevant supplementary materials must follow ARR's two-way anonymised reviewing instructions.
Direct AbjadNLP submissions must follow the anonymisation requirements published in the workshop CFP.
Authors should consult the current ACL/ARR policy before posting or discussing preprints. A publicly available preprint is not automatically a violation, but authors must comply with any binding declarations or restrictions associated with their submission.
Submissions must be original and must not violate applicable rules concerning plagiarism, substantial overlap, prior publication, or simultaneous consideration at other archival venues.
Authors must disclose related submissions and relevant earlier versions as required by the submission process.
The same manuscript must not be submitted simultaneously through AbjadNLP's direct and ARR commitment routes.
5. Research Ethics and Responsible NLP
#Authors are responsible for the accuracy, originality, attribution, and ethical integrity of their work.
Submissions must comply with applicable publication-ethics requirements, including the ACL Publication Ethics Policy adopted by AbjadNLP.
Authors must address relevant matters concerning:
- Data provenance, licensing, and permissions.
- Research participants, privacy, and sensitive information.
- Limitations, reproducibility, and transparency.
- Fair attribution and responsible citation.
- Generative AI assistance and applicable disclosure requirements.
- Potential harms and broader impacts of the research.
ARR submissions must complete the applicable Responsible NLP Research Checklist and comply with ARR's current disclosure requirements.
Research involving Arabic-script languages
AbjadNLP particularly encourages careful reporting of linguistic and community context, especially for underrepresented languages, culturally sensitive texts, and datasets containing personal information.
Authors should avoid treating languages as interchangeable merely because they share a writing system.
6. Peer Review and Decisions
#Regular AbjadNLP papers are evaluated by qualified reviewers according to the published scientific criteria.
The Programme Chairs aim to obtain three substantive reviews for each direct submission and manage the scientific decision-making process.
Reviewing must follow the applicable confidentiality and conflict-of-interest procedures.
Papers involving conflicted organising chairs must receive independent handling.
Acceptance decisions are based on scientific merit, relevant evidence, and the workshop's published requirements.
Authors may raise specific procedural concerns through the official workshop contact route, in accordance with the AbjadNLP Workshop Policy.
Shared-task system-description paper reviews and decisions remain the responsibility of the respective shared-task organising teams.
7. Camera-Ready Submission and Publication
#Following acceptance, authors must submit final manuscripts and complete all applicable publication requirements within the communicated deadlines.
For accepted regular workshop papers and shared-task overview papers, the AbjadNLP Publication Chairs are responsible for:
- Issuing camera-ready and formatting instructions.
- Communicating publication deadlines.
- Responding to author publication queries.
- Tracking final manuscripts and required forms.
- Requesting corrections and verifying metadata.
- Coordinating final proceedings preparation.
Shared-task organisers independently manage these responsibilities for their system-description papers.
Authors must ensure that titles, author names, ordering, affiliations, and publication metadata are accurate and consistent with the approved records.
Authorship changes require authorisation under the applicable formal procedures.
Publication is conditional on satisfying the relevant host-conference and publisher requirements. Acceptance alone does not guarantee publication where mandatory conditions remain unmet.
8. Registration and Presentation
#Accepted-paper authors must comply with the registration and presentation conditions confirmed by COLING 2027 and published by AbjadNLP.
Details concerning registration, presentation format, attendance, remote participation, and accessibility arrangements will be communicated through the official workshop website and acceptance instructions.
Authors should notify the responsible organisers promptly if circumstances affect their ability to meet a published requirement.
9. Questions and Contact
#Authors should use the appropriate contact route:
| Enquiry | Responsible team |
|---|---|
| Direct submission, peer review, decisions and academic appeals | AbjadNLP Programme Chairs |
| Camera-ready preparation and publication of regular and overview papers | AbjadNLP Publication Chairs |
